Job Description

We are a prominent litigation legal aid firm dedicated to serving low-income and special needs groups in the Southeastern United States. Our mission at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA) is to provide high-quality legal assistance that empowers individuals to overcome poverty and discrimination. Since our inception during the Great Depression, we have been committed to advocating for those in need across 17 counties in North Florida. Job Summary: Our Company is seeking a passionate and dedicated Florida-licensed attorney to fill the newly created "Shelter for Elders" attorney position. This role is vital in providing civil legal services to indigent seniors, with a focus on housing-related matters. The position will be based out of our downtown Jacksonville office, serving elders in Duval, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns County. Responsibilities: Embrace and support our Company’s mission, standards, policies, and procedures, ensuring confidentiality guidelines are upheld. Maintain a full-time caseload representing eligible clients, primarily older, indigent adults. Develop and maintain specialized knowledge in housing matters affecting older adults, including reverse mortgage foreclosures, door-to-door scams, wrongful evictions, substandard living conditions, discriminatory practices, and other shelter-related challenges faced by vulnerable seniors. Provide legal services to clients regarding these matters, including advice, negotiation, litigation, and administrative advocacy. Interact respectfully with clients from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating cultural competence and humility. Collaborate with colleagues, human services providers, non-profit organizations, media, community groups, courts, administrative tribunals, and the private bar to address legal issues within the community. Cooperate in all grant reporting requirements, program reporting, timekeeping, file maintenance, case closing, and compliance review. Maintain professional competence through attendance at training sessions, seminars, and conferences, and stay informed of current developments in poverty law and client service. Qualifications: Member in good standing of The Florida Bar. Minimum of three years’ practice experience, including civil trial experience. Strong organizational skills and effective verbal and written communication abilities. Ability to engage effectively with a diverse constituency of individuals and community stakeholders. Resourcefulness and initiative in project development and completion. Proficiency in Google and Microsoft applications. Benefits: Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
