Area of Consideration: Open to the Public Grade: 01 Type of Appointment: Career Service - Regular Appointment Minimum Rate: $62,236.00 Annually Job Summary This role within the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department focuses on protecting the lives and property of DC residents. The department delivers compassionate, competent, state-of-the-art basic and advanced life support emergency medical care, available 24/7. Duties and Responsibilities As a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), you will be assigned to one of the approximately 33 firehouses across the District. You will respond promptly to emergency calls, assess fire conditions, relay vital information, and take action to ensure safety and protection. Responsibilities include fire suppression, victim rescue, and property salvage. You will operate various firefighting tools, administer first aid, and perform rescues in challenging environments. Qualifications and Education U.S. citizenship required. Submit a birth certificate or valid U.S. passport with your application. Must be at least 19 years old by the application closing date. Valid driver’s license required. Provisional licenses or learners permits are not accepted. High School Diploma or GED required. Submit a copy with your application. Must pass a candidate physical ability test (C-PAT), urinalysis, and thorough medical examination. Background investigation to determine suitability for the role. Licenses and Certifications You must obtain and maintain the following for the duration of employment: Firefighter I and II EMT-Basic Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations CPR and BLS Certification Valid DC Health EMT card National Registry EMT-Basic Any additional required certifications A valid and current driver’s license is mandatory throughout employment. Working Conditions/Environment The role involves operating large emergency vehicles, exposure to various weather conditions, and working in potentially hazardous environments such as confined spaces or areas with heat, smoke, and chemicals. Personal protective equipment must be used as per safety protocols. The position requires working in a dormitory-style environment during 24-hour shifts. Other Significant Facts DC Residency Preference Claim: While DC residency is not required, those claiming it must provide proof by submitting a DC state-issued ID. Failure to do so will result in disqualification if residency preference is claimed. All necessary documents (birth certificate, passport, driver’s license, high school diploma) must be uploaded with your application. Veterans and Foster Child preference claims require additional documentation. Testing Information: Qualified applicants will be referred for an entrance exam. DC residents, as verified by a DC driver's license, will have their testing fees covered. Non-residents are responsible for the testing fees. Proficiency in English is required, but applicants with foreign language skills are encouraged to apply. The entrance exam can be taken once every three months. This position is classified as "Essential" and "Safety Sensitive," subject to annual criminal background checks and random drug testing.
