Job Description

Job Title: Lead Data Scientist/Engineer - Remote

Company Overview: We are a pioneering organization committed to the restoration of grasslands and the enhancement of soil carbon storage across the United States. Our primary objective is to empower ranchers to adopt regenerative land management practices that not only bolster soil health and biodiversity but also mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With over 125 successful partnerships across 1.2 million acres in 20 states, we implement practices that rejuvenate grasslands, enrich wildlife habitats, and promote sustainable soil health. By collaborating with us, ranchers can access new revenue streams through our carbon credit program.

Currently, more than 41% of U.S. grasslands are utilized for grazing, yet fewer than 5% are managed regeneratively, despite their significant potential to remove at least 500 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Our mission is to transform extensive degraded grasslands into flourishing ecosystems that can sequester considerable amounts of carbon. We take pride in partnering with leading organizations to advance our mission, which is grounded in scientific integrity, quality, and transparency. We have secured long-term contracts with major companies working towards reducing their carbon footprints and meeting their sustainability objectives.

Job Overview: In the capacity of Lead Data Scientist/Data Engineer, you will hold a pivotal role in the design, construction, and management of the data infrastructure that underpins the measurement and verification of soil carbon removal credits. You will work closely with agronomists, land managers, and software developers, developing insights driven by data that will steer our data science strategy and roadmap. A significant component of your responsibilities will involve creating robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) solutions that guarantee the accuracy and transparency of our carbon removal initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and implement a comprehensive data strategy that aligns with our organizational mission.
  • Design, develop, and manage scalable data architectures, pipelines, and databases that facilitate large-scale quantification of soil carbon removals and MRV.
  • Oversee the gathering, integration, and validation of data from diverse sources, ensuring its accuracy, consistency, and integrity.
  • Spearhead the creation of data-driven MRV solutions to monitor, verify, and report on land management practices that contribute to soil carbon removals, ensuring adherence to industry standards.
  • Champion the development and deployment of advanced analytics, machine learning models, and predictive algorithms to enhance carbon measurement and monitoring capabilities.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including environmental scientists, software engineers, and product managers, to integrate data solutions into our carbon management platform.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations that offer actionable insights to both internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends and technologies in data science, data engineering, and environmental sustainability, identifying opportunities to refine our data capabilities and foster innovation.

Required Skills:

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in data science, data engineering, or a related discipline, showcasing a strong history of leadership, innovation, and tangible results.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field; a PhD is advantageous.
  • Proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, or Java.
  • Experienced with data warehousing, ETL processes, and database management (e.g., SQL, NoSQL).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) and big data technologies.
  • Solid background in statistical analysis, machine learning, and predictive modeling.
  • Knowledge of GIS, remote sensing, and environmental data is highly valued.
  • Prior experience in developing MRV systems for carbon projects is a significant asset.
  • Superior communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A genuine passion for contributing to the regenerative movement, along with a foundational understanding of soil carbon storage and regenerative land management practices, which can be acquired on the job.
  • Previous startup experience is preferred but not necessary; an understanding of working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment is crucial.
  • Willingness to work from our office in downtown San Antonio.

Career Growth Opportunities: Joining our team offers a unique chance to contribute to impactful projects within the regenerative movement, along with opportunities for professional development and career advancement while leading innovative data-driven initiatives.

Company Culture and Values: We are committed to fostering a workplace that is free from discrimination. We believe that diversity in experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds enriches our work environment and enhances our service. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and ensure that all candidates receive equal consideration.
