A research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Animal Disease Center (NADC), Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Research Unit located in Ames, Iowa. The selected participant will be part of a team of microbiologists, immunologists, bioinformaticians, and veterinarians investigating host-microbe interactions to discover antibiotic alternatives that will improve animal health and food safety. We are looking for an outstanding scientist who is proactive, independent, and motivated to use advanced wet-lab and computational approaches to solve complex biological problems.

Compensation and Benefits

Participants will receive a monthly stipend based on their educational level and experience. Health insurance is required for participation in this program but is not provided by ARS.

Skills

  • Proficiency in microbial culture techniques
  • Experience with PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, and cloning
  • Familiarity with cell/tissue culture and immune assays (ELISA, immunoblots)
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and data analysis
  • Ability to design and execute in vitro and in vivo experiments
  • Strong analytical skills in proteomics, genomics, and transcriptomics

Responsibilities

  • Conduct experiments and bioinformatics analyses related to host-microbe interactions
  • Evaluate colonization factors and immunological responses
  • Design and assess modalities targeting food-borne pathogens
  • Analyze bacterial community fluctuations following various interventions
  • Engage in collaborative research projects within a multidisciplinary team

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR)
  • Strong background in microbiology, immunology, or related fields
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills

Education Requirements

  • Graduate degree in microbiology, biology, or a related field is preferred

Education Requirements Credential Category

  • Master’s degree or PhD in relevant scientific discipline

Experience Requirements

  • Previous research experience in microbiology or related fields is advantageous
  • Familiarity with advanced experimental techniques and data analysis methods is preferred
